After Prince’s death, Famed director Spike Lee sent a call of action to fans. He requested for fans to come to Brooklyn and have a celebration of life in the form of a block party for what would’ve been Prince’s 58th birthday.
Sway hosted the event along with Lee and there were special guest appearances from Al Sharpton, Rosie Perez, former Prince associates and more. Lee entered the party holding a gold Prince symbol, followed by a troupe of children drummers, all wearing purple. Stephen G. Hill from BET promised fans that the upcoming tribute at this year’s awards will be on point. Sharpton said a prayer for both Prince and Muhammad Ali, who died early Saturday morning.
For six hours, fans of all ages, race and creeds partied to hits like “When Doves Cry,” “Cream,” “Erotic City,” “1999,” and more. The dress code was purple and fans showed up and showed out in their purple and other Prince memorabilia.
“Y’all came to celebrate Prince today? Will you celebrate him tomorrow? Will you celebrate him next week? Will you celebrate him next year? Will you celebrate him the rest of your life?” TV host Sway asked the crowd, to cheers.
Fans came together for the love of one man. Check out the photos and videos below.
