Kerry Washington reveled in a sit-down for Variety’s “Actors on Actors” that she has been fired from jobs before, because she didn’t play the stereotypical black woman role.
Washington said that before Scandal, she was actually cast in two other pilots, but was let go and recast because she didn’t fit the “girlfriend” role and they wanted her to be more “hood” and “urban.”
Washington also discussed how she was not alone and how it’s not just black stereotypes but gay ones as well saying:
“I’ve had friends of mine say like they’re tired of ‘gayface’ and I was like, ‘What’s gayface?’ They were like, ‘It’s the gay version of blackface, like come in and be more effeminate”.
Well luckily for Kerry, that was a blessing in disguise. Now, she’s Olivia Pope! Read the full Variety interview here.
