One of the most interesting questions from the chat was about the impact that streaming sites like Spotify, Apple Music and Tidal have had on DJs and if they can benefit from them at all.
HipHopWired.com Senior Editor Maurice Garland asked:
Do you see DJs being able to capitalize from these streaming music wars in any way?
DJ Drama replied:
The landscape has changed. It’s a new way for artists to get their music to the people. So the streaming and various platforms have made the mixtape DJ somewhat irrelevant, to be honest. Things are changing. That’s why I went and got me a record label.
Given that during the mixtape era, (2005-2011) DJ Drama was one of the prominent forces in the game he may have a point. At one time mixtapes were exclusive to websites like DatPiff and LiveMixtapes, now Apple Music and Tidal are getting exclusively albums and even mixtape. One things for sure, the game is always chaning and you have to get in, create the next wave or get lost. Peep the video below.
