Happy Birthday Tupac !
To commemorate the occasion, June 16 has been dubbed Tupac Shakur Day in the city of Oakland.
As June 16 is the late rapper’s birthday, the proclamation was made by Oakland mayor Libby Schaaf, and was influenced his community hip hop activism and major influence on the genere.
“Although Tupac was born in Harlem, New York City in 1971, later lived in Baltimore, Maryland, and in Marin City, California, he cherished his time in Oakland as his home, stating that he got his ‘Game’ from Oakland,” the proclamation says. “Tupac once said: ‘…I give all my love to Oakland, if I’ma claim somewhere I’ma claim Oakland.”
This announcement comes on the heels of Sprites announcement that Tupac’s, along with J. Cole and Missy Elliot’s, lyrics will be printed on their limited edition brand cans later this month.
