The 2016 XXL Freshman list was revealed this week, and just like every other year, chaos ensued. The day after the official release, XXL’s Editor in Chief, Vanessa Satten spoke about their choices, people who were left out and why. The discussion turned the absence of Post Malone.

“We were told by his camp that he wasn’t paying attention to hip-hop so much, he was going in more of a rock/pop/country direction,” Vanessa explained. “We never even discussed playing music, we never even met on it. Once we heard he was going in a whole different music direction and wasn’t really acknowledging hip-hop, and really once they were telling us, ‘We’re going in a country direction,’ that’s the message that you don’t really want to be in the hip-hop world so we’re just gonna let it go rather than chase you down and beat you in the head over it.”

In a twist of events, Post said that’s not the case at all. He posted a long letter on Instagram stating the real reason he wasn’t on the cover is because he was tired and didn’t feel like flying to New York to shoot the cover. He also denies the claims that he’s abandoning hip-hop for other genres.

Vanessa has responded, saying that the words came straight from his PR team, and she tried to confirm with him and his management team to no avail. Who do you believe?
