15-year-old Dajerria Becton and her family are still looking for justice after a Texas grand jury decided not to go forward and indict the police officer who was caught on tape grabbing her by the hair and slamming her on the ground during an incident at a pool party last summer.
In the video it’s very clear that now former police officer Eric Casebolt was aggressively going after a group of Black teens (gun and baton in hand) outside of a pool party while responding to reports of a disturbance in the neighborhood.
Most of the video is just Casebolt yelling at kids to go home, but then one of the cops turns to a young black girl (Dajerria) and slamming her on the ground, grabbing her hair, and pushing her face into the grass with her hands pinned behind her back.
After the announcement was made public that the former officer would not be indicted for criminal charges, Dajerria’s family has decided in turn to file a civil lawsuit against him. Becton Family attorney Kim Cole spoke with NewsOne on Monday, where she spoke on the teen’s emotional and physical condition as of late:
“Physically, she has healed. She is struggling emotionally. With all of this being back in the media again, it’s difficult. It’s tough for her. This is something that will follow her for the rest of her life.”
The Becton family’s civil suit against former officer Casebolt includes charges against him for assault, battery, unlawful detention, and infliction of emotional distress.
