Are we witnessing the death of albums?
According to Billboard, album sales for his year are the lowest they have ever been since the invention of Nielsen Soundscan. Over all album sales, including track equivalent album sales (10 tracks equal one unit) and streaming equivalent albums (1,500 streams equals one album unit), total 100.3 million units, falling 13.6%.
While album sales are declining, streaming sales are on the up and up. Between January and July alone, over 208.9 billion songs were streamed, increasing 58.7%. Drake’s VIEWS, Adelle’s 25 and Beyonce’s Lemonade are the only albums to sell over 1 million copies this year.
