One police officer was killed and another was shot and wounded during a routine traffic stop in San Diego last night (Thursday). A suspect was taken into custody and is also being treated in the hospital for a gunshot wound. San Diego Police Chief Shelley Zimmerman released a statement saying:
“I’m extremely heartbroken to report that we had an officer shot and killed. There were heroic efforts by the officers on scene, heroic efforts by the doctors to save his life.”
The two officers were part of the San Diego Police Department’s gang suppression unit. Police haven’t figured out yet if there are any other suspects. The officer who survived had to undergo surgery for a bullet wound in the upper torso, but is going to ultimately be okay.
