“Atlanta,” the new FX comedy series created by and starring Donald Glover, got the highest-rated premiere of any basic cable primetime scripted comedy in over three years. The premiere telecast on Sept. 6 drew in 1.2 million viewers in the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demographic, making it the most-watched basic cable scripted primetime comedy debut in the key demo since the April 2013 series premiere of “Inside Amy Schumer.”
Atlanta also stands as the biggest comedy debut for any FX or FXX half-hour since 2011’s Wilfred, including last winter’s Baskets (1.75 million total viewers and 1.05 million adults under 50). The show’s success isn’t that surprising, as it’s been repeatedly hailed by critics as the best new series on television, and with due cause. Atlanta airs on FX on Tuesday nights at 10 p.m. EST.
