Donald Trump seems to be having a hard tome finding artists to perform at his inauguration that arn’t contractually forced (aka The Rocketts) and needless to say, nobody is surprised.
British singer Rebecca Ferguson has announced that she has been asked to perform at president-elect Donald Trump’s inauguration. She didnt immediately shut it down like everyone else, instead she layed down a condition. She will agree to perform only if she can sing “Strange Fruit.”
Now, for all those not familar, “Strange Fruit” is a well known song about racism recored first in 1939 by Billie Holiday and again in 1965 by Nina Simone. Penned by Abel Meeropl, the lyrics read,
“Southern trees bear a strange fruit
Blood on the leaves and blood at the root
Black bodies swingin’ in the Southern breeze
Strange fruit hangin’ from the poplar trees.”
Rebecca released the follow statement on her Twitter account:
“I’ve been asked and this is my answer. If you allow me to sing “strange fruit” a song that has huge historical importance, a song that was blacklisted in the United States for being too controversial. A song that speaks to all the disregarded and down trodden black people in the United States. A song that is a reminder of how love is the only thing that will conquer all the hatred in this world, then I will graciously accept your invitation and see you in Washington. Best Rebecca X”
Donald is getting reality checks left and right and we are so here for it. Well done Rebecca, well done.
