Just weeks after being found guilty of murdering nine African Americans who were attending bible study at the Emanuel AME Church in Charleston, South Carolina, Dylann Roof has been sentenced to death by a jury after hours of deliberation.
24 out of the 33 charges against Roof qualify as federal hate crimes. “I still feel like I had to do it,” Dylann Roof said to the courtroom before deliberation. The 12-member jury three black jurors, nine white – deliberated for less than three hours before deciding the 22-year-old self-proclaimed white supremacist should die for his crimes rather than spend the rest of his life in prison.
U.S. District Judge Richard Gergel has scheduled a hearing for Today (Jan. 11) to formally impose that sentence and hear from loved ones who wish to address the murderer.
