A large section of Interstate 85 near Piedmont Road, northbound collapsed Thursday evening (Mar. 30) after an enormous fire broke out under the highway. The collapse, which happened in the middle of rush hour traffic now leaves a portion of Piedmont road and a part of the Buford Connector closed.
The Georgia Department of Transportation said Friday (Mar. 31) it was unknown how long repairs will take. “But we do know that it is expected to be a time-consuming event,” GDOT Commissioner Russell R. McMurry said in a news release.
Bridge Inspectors were on the scene after and determined that the damage was on both the collapsed northside and southbound side of the bridge.
“The extent of the fire-related damage necessitates extensive reconstruction activities to ensure the safety of motorists,” McMurry said. “We began design of the known damaged sections last night and continue designs as information is received.”
No injuries or deaths were reported.
