KYLE is sitting at No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100 thanks to the success of his Lil Yatchy-assisted single “iSpy.” The Southern California rapper stopped by Ebro In The Morning to discuss his long road to success, why he makes “happy” music and his dad copying Denzel Washington in “Training Day.”
KYLE calls his first time at the morning show “hella scary” due to his first interactions with Ebro at Beats 1 studios where Ebro admitted that he wasn’t sure about him. Ebro seemed to change his tune after seeing him perform at SXSW. KYLE said that the success of “iSpy” wasn’t calculated at all. He followed the release of his debut album Beautiful Loser with Smyle. After coming off tour with Hoodie Allen, KYLE felt stagnant and decided to drop one song a month, “iSpy” took off and now he’s here.
When the morning show went back to “iSpy,” Ebro compared it to Biz Markie’s “Just A Friend.” KYLE said he makes happy music because a lot of kids are sad and deserve that happiness in the song. “There are kids that deserve a boost of happiness,” he said. KYLE’s dad introduced him to hip-hop. He wasn’t exposed to rap until 10 when he father played ODB in the car. Musically he said that he was stuck in “white world” of ’90s rock because of his mom and grandparents.
KYLE also talks about his dad impersonating Denzel Washington in “Training Day,” Jadakiss being the best rapper alive and how his mom raps. Watch the interview below.
