New York State’s first African-American Muslim judge has been found dead.

The body of 65 year old Judge Sheila Abdus-Salaam’s body was discovered in Harlem along the riverside on Wednesday, just one day after being reported as missing.

Though declining to go into detail about the suspected circumstances surrounding her death, police do say that her body showed no obvious signs of trauma.

Held in high esteem among her colleagues as a “trailblazer”, the medical examiner says they plan to study her body to determine an exact cause of death.

Chief Judge Janet DiFiore had this to say of Sheila:

“Her personal warmth, uncompromising sense of fairness, and bright legal mind were an inspiration to all of us who had the good fortune to know her.”
