Former NFL star Aaron Hernandez, who was serving a life sentence for a murder conviction has died after hanging himself in his prison cell early Wednesday morning (April 19). His apparent suicide comes less than a week after Hernandez was acquitted of double murder.
The 27-year-old was found in his cell by guards at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center just after 3 am, according to the Department of Correction spokesman Christopher Fallon said in a statement. The former New England Patriots tight end was pronounced dead at UMass Memorial-HealthAlliance Hospital around 4 am.
Hernandez hung himself using a bed sheet that he attached to a window in his single cell. He reportedly tried to block the cell door from the inside by jamming the door with several items, Fallon said.
Hernandez was reportedly beginning the process to appeal his 2015 First-Degree Murder conviction. Fallon said he’s not aware of any suicide note left by Hernandez and says the investigation is ongoing. Officials had no concerns about Hernandez being suicidal. Fallon said he would’ve been transferred to a mental health unit if that was the case.
