The city of Fresno, California, mourns the loss of three innocent victims. Kori Ali Muhammad, an African American man from Fresno, has been arrested and charged with a heinous hate crime –  shooting and killing three white people, at random. On Tuesday, April 18, Muhammad opened fire on the three victims, ages 34. 37, and 58, and at least one other person who was unharmed. He allegedly pointed a gun and threatened three Hispanic women, including a 4-year-old child, but declined to fire.

Now, officials say,  Muhammad will face four counts of murder and two counts of assault with a deadly weapon. The fourth charge is from a previous incident last week.

In an interview, the police chief stated that the suspect admitted to killing each victim and yelled “Allahu Akbar”, which means, God is greatest when arrested. While the idea of this being considered a terrorist attack has to be raised to question, research done on Muhammad’s social media, showed his great disdain for white people, leading police to believe that this hate crime was based solely on race alone.

Muhammad is not new to the criminal justice system. According to CNN, in 2005, he was indicted on charged of cocaine possession with intent to distribute and possession of two rifles and a semiautomatic handgun.

At that time, his public defender raised the question of whether or not he was mentally stable enough to stand trial. He said that Muhammed “appeared eccentric with some bizarre beliefs” and may have even had hallucinations. He also said he’d had “at least two prior mental health hospitalizations.” Nevertheless, Muhammed was sentenced to 110 months in prison but only served 92.

Thank goodness this man is off of the streets.
