Rear Admiral Sylvia Trent-Adams was appointed the new Surgeon General, while the previous one General Vivek Murthy, an Obama holdover, was asked to resign. Trent-Adams was his deputy and she becomes the first non-doctor to become Surgeon General.
Despite that Trent-Adams is qualified to take the position. Besides directly being behind her current position as a deputy she has received her doctorate in Philosophy from the University of Maryland. She also served as a research nurse at the same university and served in our army as a nurse. She joined the Commissioned Corps of the Public Health Service in 1992 and served as the deputy associate administrator for the HIV/AIDS bureau of the Health Resources and Services Administration before joining the surgeon general’s office.
It’s reported that General Murthy was pushed out because of his stance on gun control. He has repeatedly gone on record saying that gun violence is a public health threat.
