“Urban Word New York City,” a program started to honor young poets, has expanded to over 35 cities within the past 4 years. Michael Cirelli the Executive Director sits down with Ebro In The Morning to expound. Cirelli is accompanied by two finalists for the inaugural title of National Youth Poet Laureate; Amanda Gorman, Youth Poet Laureate of the West and Hajjar Baban, Youth Poet Laureate of the Midwest.

While the poets discuss how cathartic the art of writing can be, it’s also made known that they are much more than writers. “We wanted to celebrate the kids who were not only dope poets but dope activists and leaders. You have to do more than just write. You have to have a commitment to social justice in your poetry. You have to have a commitment to your community” says Cirelli.
