17-year-old Martaevious Santiago was celebrating his birthday when his 13-year-old sister Teddra King came up to give him a hug. After she hugged him and walked away, Santiago aimed a loaded semi-automatic handgun at the back of her head and shot her. After that, he called 911 and told them it was an accident. He also called his father and said:
“Daddy, I’m sorry. It was an accident. I’m sorry, Dad.”
His father said “I can’t fault anyone for this here. It happened.” The gun was apparently given to him by a 14-year-old friend who has since been arrested on an outstanding delinquency warrant.
Santiago has been charged with manslaughter and remains in secure detention until his next hearing in May.
