Betsy DeVos, the arguably least qualified secretary of education, has been chosen for the commencement speech at the HBCU Bethune-Cookman University’s graduation ceremony on May 10.
This decision was met with immediate backlash from the community of students and resulted in a Change.org petition that has already gained 3200+ supporters. The petition cites DeVos’ support of cutting much-needed programs, which aid students with school debt, as one of the reasons why she should not speak at their graduation.
It would seem the graduating students do not want a billionaire, supported by a defunct White House administration, to be the last one to address them as undergrads before they join the work force. This is reasonable considering that DeVos has garnered massive amounts of negative attention from late-night talk shows and journalists, as well as the protests that arise wherever she speaks.
