“Moonlight” actors Ashton Sanders and Jharrel Jerome took home the MTV Movie Award for “Best Kiss” last night (May 7) In Hollywood. The category included many popular nominees such as “Beauty and the Beast,” “La La Land,” and “Empire.”
“Moonlight” winning this award made many extremely joyous because of the films beautiful story of two young black males struggling with the tribulations of growing up in a rough community where different types of sexuality cannot be embraced due to social constructs.
Ashton Sanders said the following while accepting the award:
“I think it’s safe to say that it is okay for young performers, especially us minority performers, to step out of the box. This award is for that. It’s for artists who need to step out of the box and do whatever it takes to tell a story and whatever it takes to make a change, to get people to wake up… This award is bigger than Jharrel and I, this represents more than a kiss. This is for those who feel like ‘the others’, ‘the misfits’,”
