While it should be a good thing that many Confederate statues of famous slavery defenders are getting removed, some people are quite furious about that. Among them is known “alt-right” leader, Richard Spencer as well as several white supremacists. Over the weekned Spencer along with some white supremacists led a protest in Lee Park, located in Charlottesville, Virginia. There they chanted things like “You Will Not Replace Us” and “Russia is Our Friend” while holding torches, very reminiscent of the KKK.
After about 10 minutes, Charlottesville police dispersed this group. The mayor of Charlottesville immediately denounced this type of protest, saying the event was:
“either profoundly ignorant” or “designed to instill fear.” “Either way, as mayor of this city, I want everyone to know this: we reject this intimidation. We are a welcoming city, but such intolerance is not welcome here,”
In time this statue will be removed anyway. The park named after Confederate General, Robert E. Lee, will also have its name changed. While this change is good to see, it’s scary to see people clinging on to those old dangerous times.
