A large group of students at Notre Dame walked out of their own graduation yesterday! Why? Because Mike Pence was their commencement speaker.
The group calls themselves WeStandFor and had gained attention for this walkout in the past couple of days as it was planned. Several of the students spoke up on their outrages, Mike Pence’s views on marginalized people such as immigrants and members of the LGBTQ community. On their protest event page they had this to say:
We invite all students, faculty, and families who will be attending the Commencement ceremony to walk out with us as we take back our graduation and show our dissatisfaction with the University’s selection of Mike Pence as the honored speaker. We also will walk out in dignity and solidarity with all marginalized people affected by Pence’s politics, both on this campus and throughout our nation.
This walkout came amid mixed reaction, some of the audience booed the students for doing so. The students go on to say controversy is not what they intended. They didn’t want to disrupt the commencement for others, but just stand up for what they believe in. And for that, I salute those brave students at Notre Dame, congratulations.
