The people of Brooklyn caused quite the uproar when landlord Samuel Berkowitz stated that he planned on destroying the mural of the Notorious B.I.G. that stands on Bedford and Quincy in Bed-Stuy Brooklyn. Berkowitz claimed the steady stream of people who would come to the mural to pay homage was his reason for wanting to remove it. He told the mural creator’s Spread Art NYC that they would have to pay $1250 a month in rent in order for the mural to stay.

The backlash began after Spread Art NYC reported the mural was under threat of destruction, and it continued to grow thanks to online news outlets and the voices of the people who hold Biggie in a special place in their hearts and minds. A petition began which gained over 3500 signatures in support of keeping the mural intact. The support of T.I and the Brooklyn Nets also assisted the movement.
