Bill Maher is the host of the late night talk show “Real Time” on HBO. He’s also another white man with a platform who will inevitably find himself in the hot seat for his ignorant actions. Friday night during a live airing of his show, Maher blurted out the N-word in a joking manner while sitting down with Senator Benjamin Sasse to discuss his new book; “The Vanishing American Adult.”
This cringeworthy moment in the show was reminiscent to banter you would probably overhear two white men having on a regular Sunday afternoon, on the front porch of a 40 acre estate while drinking lemonade served by a black great great grandmother. Maher’s joke was completely unacceptable, and to Senator Sasse’s defense, hailing from Nebraska, was completely left-field of what he intended.
Maher defends his racial slur by stating,
“Friday nights are always my worst night of sleep because I’m up reflecting on the things I should or shouldn’t have said on my live show. Last night as a particularly long night as I regret the word I used in the banter of a live moment. The word was offensive and I regret saying it and am very sorry.”
HBO made sure to do damage control as well in an issued statement,
“Bill Maher’s comment last night was completely inexcusable and tasteless.” “We are removing his deeply offensive comment from any subsequent airings of the show.”
Many people have come out to show their outrage with Maher’s word choice and the hashtag #FireBillMaher has been created on twitter.
Please @HBO Do Not Air Another Episode Of Real Time With Bill Maher.
