Early Wednesday morning (Jun. 14), Rep. Steve Scalise, a congressional staffer and members of the congressional police force were shot in Alexandria, Virginia, in what is being called a “deliberate attack.”
Scalise, the third-ranking member of House Republican leadership as the majority whip, was reportedly shot in the hip and two Capitol Hill police agents were shot, according to Rep. Mo Brooks. Currently, Scalise was reported as being in stable condition but undergoing surgery.
Two law enforcement sources told CNN the shooter is in police custody and has been taken to the hospital. Fox News Insider reports Rep. Ron DeSantis says he was approached by the shooter who asked him questions about who was taking part in the practice for the annual Congressional Baseball Game.
“A guy…walked up to us that was asking whether it was Republicans or Democrats out there,” he said. DeSantis added that the man wasn’t carrying anything, however, he did see him walk towards the field.
Members of Congress were practicing for a game that was scheduled for Thursday night at Nationals Park. It has not been revealed if the game will continue as scheduled. President Trump is expected to make a public statement at 11:30 a.m. EST and House Speaker Paul Ryan is expected to follow at noon.
