Trump took to the podium to address the people, as the reports of a shooting in Virginia at a Republican lawmakers baseball practice gripped the nation. The President condemned the attacks and offered up prayers from the whole country for those injured and Rep. Steve Scalise, who was shot by the attacker and is in critical condition.
The President announced the attacker had died in the shoot-out with Capitol Police and preached for unity saying, “We may have our differences, but we do well in times like these to remember that everyone who serves in our nation’s Capitol is here because, above all, they love our country.”
The attacked was identified as James Hodgkinson, who has shared anti-Trump rants on his social media, as well as praise for Bernie Sanders. Sanders has since referred to the act as “despicable” and intensely condemns it.
The only positive outcomes from this story are again attributed to the work of police who prevented the man from doing more harm.
