In a senseless and sad act of violence, an NYPD officer was slain early Wednesday (Jul. 5). Her name was Miosotis Familia, she was 48 and was a mother of 3 children. She and her partner were sitting in their police van in the Bronx when a man randomly ran up on them and shot her in her head. She was taken to St.Barnabas Hospital where she was later pronounced dead.
Familia and her partner chased the suspect, 34-year-old Alexander Bonds down one block. When confronted he pulled out a gun and he was shot and killed by the police. The revolver found on him was a stolen one from four years again in Charleston, Virginia. He had multiple arrests before.
Many people spoke up in Familia’s honor and spoke of the type of person she is. They said:
“Fully knowing the dangers that she faced, she suited up in uniform every day and stood tall against those who threaten and terrorize the good folks of the Bronx,” the union said in a statement.A friend, Isabel Roman, said Familia had 12-year-old twins and a 20-year-old child.“She was a very jovial, happy person,” Roman said.Carlos Corporan, Familia’s brother-in-law, said she was an excellent woman and the family was “completely devastated.”
