Putin has ordered 755 American diplomatic officials to be removed from their roles in the Russian Federation. This announcement was confirmed by Putin on Sunday, July 30, after it became official that Trump would sign into effect new sanctions on Russia that were passed by overwhelming vote.

Putin’s statement, which was quoted by Russian state media, said, “We waited a long time for things to perhaps change for the better… We had such hope that the situation would change, but judging by the situation that will not be soon… I thought it was time for us to show that we will not leave this without an answer. As for other possible measures, or whether it is a lot or not, this is quite sensible from the point of view of the work of the diplomatic department.”

The Americans set to lose their positions overseas include diplomats and technical workers, which will reduce the number of American diplomats in Russia to 455, the equivalent of Russian diplomats in the US.

When Russia was sanctioned at the end of Obama’s final term, for meddling with the election and advancing their military in Ukraine, they did not make any retaliation moves. Now that Trump is signing sanctions against the Russians, they have made swift retaliation against the US.
