In response to White Nationalist’s “Unite The Right” protest in Charlottesville, VA on August 12, several of peaceful counterprotests sprouted throughout the city to combat the hate being spread throughout the city. Unfortunately, the protests didn’t go peacefully as planned as a silver car plowed into the crowd killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer and injuring 19 others.
The silver car sped at a reported speed of 40 MPH down a small side street in the center of town and then into the back of another car, before backing up and departing. 20-year-old James Alex Fields Jr. from Maumee, OH was arrested on suspicion of second-degree murder, malicious wounding, and failure to stop in an accident that resulted in death.” Fields was spotted and photographed earlier that day at the “Untie The Right” protest.

Video of car hitting anti-racist protestors. Let there be no confusion: this was deliberate terrorism. My prayers with victims. Stay home. pic.twitter.com/MUOZs71Pf4

Buzzfeed also reports that two officers were killed in a plane crash about seven miles outside of the city. Both the pilot Lt. H. Jay Cullen, and Trooper-Pilot Berke M.M. Bates died at the scene. According to a police statement, the helicopter was “assisting public safety resources with the ongoing situation in Charlottesville.” No one on the ground was hurt.
